Typhoon Maria is currently located 1,660 km east of Eluanbi, moving west-northwest at 27 km/h, with its speed increasing. The maximum wind speed near its center is 55 m/s (approximately 198 km/h). It is forecast that by 20:00 on the 9th, its center will be positioned 1,020 km east of Eluanbi.
Maria has a well-defined structure with a clear eye, which at one point even showed signs of a double-eye formation. Its path may turn northwestward—historically, northwest typhoons have brought heavy rainfall to Taiwan, causing landslides and floods. There is an 80% chance Maria will affect northern, central, and eastern Taiwan (Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Taoyuan), and a 50% chance it will impact Miaoli, Hsinchu, Taichung, Nantou, and Hualien.

The Central Weather Bureau has lifted the heavy rain advisory. On Monday, July 9, the weather across Taiwan will be sunny to partly cloudy. Due to Maria’s threat to northern Taiwan, many are starting to wonder if there will be a typhoon day off. Regarding this...A decision will be made through a video conference between the Central Weather Bureau, which issues the land warning, and local county and city mayors on the evening of the day before the typhoon hits, specifically at 7 PM. The final call will be assessed and decided by the respective city and county governments and their teams.
New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu, who was visiting Singapore, has also decided to return to Taiwan earlier and will be back at the city government office on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Taipei City Government decided in March 2018 that full-day or morning typhoon days off would be announced before 10:00 PM the night before or before 4:30 AM on the day itself. For afternoon typhoon days off, announcements would be made before 10:30 AM.In response to Typhoon Maria, Taipei City has decided to announce whether there will be a typhoon day off on the following day by 8:00 PM on Tuesday.An earlier announcement will only be made if there are changes in the typhoon’s speed or direction. As the typhoon is expected to affect northern Taiwan, those planning to travel abroad should pay close attention to flight schedules.
