Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days reignites the fantasy film craze

The South Korean film Along with the Gods was released in Taiwan at the end of 2017 and quickly sparked heated discussions. Its total box office earnings across Taiwan approached NT$490 million, not only making it the highest-grossing Korean film in Taiwanese cinema history but also the second-highest-grossing film in Korean cinematic history. This also generated significant pre-release buzz for its sequel, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, set to premiere in Taiwan on August 8, drawing widespread global attention.

Along with the Gods explores the theme of reincarnation, combining top-tier acting talent, epic fantasy settings, Hollywood-level visual effects, thrilling action sequences, and an emotionally moving storyline. The film ultimately attracted over 14.4 million viewers in Korea alone. Moreover, it achieved consecutive box office successes in Hong Kong, North America, Australia, Vietnam, and other countries, fully showcasing the exceptional appeal of Korean cinema.

The film is adapted from a webtoon by cartoonist Joo Ho-min, which depicts the afterlife in a realistic way, resonating deeply with readers and presenting a stable worldview. It also delves into the complex relationships between humans and gods, making it especially appealing to a wide range of age groups. After its debut on “WEBTOON,” it accumulated over 100 million views. The printed version sold more than 450,000 copies and received numerous awards in the Korean comic industry, including the “Bucheon International Comics Festival Award” and the “Korean Comic Awards – Presidential Prize,” earning high acclaim in the comic world.

Now adapted into a film, the production team spent six years in preparation and invested a budget of 40 billion KRW (approximately NT$1.08 billion), filming on location in over 150 places including Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Busan, Anseong, Pyeongchang, Pyeongtaek, and Iksan. Additionally, they enlisted Dexter Studios, Korea’s leading special effects company, which has worked on films such as Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings and The Taking of Tiger Mountain, to vividly recreate the various hellish scenes from the comics on the big screen.

Director Kim Yong-hwa stated that Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days can be considered the starting point of the Along with the Gods series. To connect the stories of the two films and make better use of the film’s background, the challenging decision was made to shoot both parts simultaneously. Particularly, the first part had to establish the overarching worldview and develop the unique personalities of the characters, so that audiences could more easily understand the messages conveyed in the second part. Therefore, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days will present even more nuanced emotional depth and a more in-depth narrative. Many of the storylines hinted at in the first part will come together like puzzle pieces in the second. If the focus of the first film was on the seven trials of the nobleman Kim Ja-hong in the afterlife, this installment will expand further, unfolding a grand story against the backdrop of the living world and the afterlife, past and present. As the narratives of the afterlife and the living world progress, the hidden pasts of the three grim reapers will gradually be revealed. The thousand-year-old fate that binds them, as well as the mysteries of their origins, will bring fresh excitement and emotion to audiences.
