The most anticipated event during the Lunar New Year is the lantern festival. Each city and county puts on its own unique display, and the Nantou Lantern Festival recently unveiled its main light installation for the Year of the Pig, “Fu Dudu,” also themed around the pig and integrating a highly futuristic sci-tech design that resonates with the current tech-savvy generation, creating a one-of-a-kind signature main light.

The 2019 Nantou Lantern Festival offers plenty of highlights, including a dual-format (land and water) event with the main lantern area in Nantou and a water-based lantern zone in Puli. Over 20 themed lantern areas are featured. The festival also incorporates six major special theme activities such as daytime sand sculpture exhibitions, magnificent flower fields, insect VR displays, and nighttime fireworks shows, water dance performances, and night-time sand sculpture light shows — all exciting Lunar New Year events.
The 4D sand sculpture exhibition, themed “Mythical Sand City, Dreamtime Realm,” features works inspired by famous Nantou attractions and local legends, creating seven themed zones, plus a nighttime sand sculpture light show.
The newly completed Romantic Lovers’ Bridge made its first public appearance at the 2019 Nantou Lantern Festival and hosted a fireworks show on its opening day, February 2.

In addition, the small lanterns for the Year of the Pig are also very charming, featuring traditional red and gold color schemes along with cartoon-style pig designs that captivate children’s attention. Another major highlight of the lantern festival — the “lantern robot” — is extremely eye-catching. Standing taller than a person, the robot-shaped lantern boasts an imposing presence and can even walk, making it a must-visit photo spot once the festival opens.
