Japan Airlines (JAL) officially launched a new low-cost airline, TBL, on July 31. The name “TBL” is an abbreviation for “To Be Launch,” and the airline will primarily operate medium- and long-haul international routes to Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Its existing budget airline, Jetstar Japan, is a joint venture between JAL and Qantas of Australia, mainly operating domestic and short-haul international flights. In contrast, the new budget airline (TBL) is wholly funded by Japan Airlines. It plans to introduce two Boeing 787-8 aircraft of the same model as those used by JAL, with increased seating capacity and a 10% boost in passenger load.

The new budget airline (TBL) will be based at Tokyo's Narita Airport, operating medium- and long-haul routes to Asia, Europe, and the United States. With longer flight distances, it targets Japanese passengers traveling overseas as well as foreign tourists visiting Japan, and is scheduled to begin operations in 2020, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympics. In the future, it is also expected to offer low-cost transit options via Tokyo to European and American countries.
