Since early 2018, many netizens have been taking photos and sharing the unique spatial design of the Starbucks Hualien HuiLan branch. Situated in Hualien’s HuiLan Bay, the branch’s structure was designed by the acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, using shipping containers as the main material. Inspired by the spreading branches of a tree, the design gives new life to containers that have traveled across global ports.

The building combines the mechanical principles of traditional Chinese dougong (bracket sets) to create interlocking layers of container spaces. For the interior, the Hualien HuiLan branch retains the original appearance of the containers, with only some walls decorated with wood veneer panels. It also incorporates vibrant colors inspired by the local Amis indigenous culture, showcasing Starbucks’ continuous innovation and diversity in creating unique in-store experiences rooted in local culture.
The Hualien HuiLan branch is also the first drive-through (DRIVE THROUGH) store in Hualien City and County, offering the public a fast and convenient way to enjoy Starbucks coffee.
