The newest check-in spot in Changhua is a “heart-shaped field” in Zhutang Township, where instead of rice or wheat, they grow the commonly eaten “sweet potato leaves.” Spanning a massive 600 ping, the field’s owner welcomes the public to visit for free.

The heart-shaped field is created by densely planting dark purple sweet potato leaves, then using ropes to manually outline a heart shape, and finally covering it with green sweet potato leaves. As the leaves grow, the heart shape gradually emerges.

The field owner named the sweet potato leaf field “Tian Zai Xin Tou” (The Field in the Heart). The owner, Tseng Chung-en, nearly lost his life to illness years ago, but was nursed back to health by his wife’s attentive care. To show his gratitude for her devoted support during his illness, and for her constant travel between north and south for farm work, Tseng Chung-en created this surprise “Tian Zai Xin Tou” heart-shaped field as a gift to his beloved wife and family.

From above the heart-shaped sweet potato field, you can see the high-speed rail, and to the left is the famous “Hundred-Year Nine-Dragon Banyan King.” After taking photos at the heart-shaped field, you can visit their production cooperative to see how sweet potato leaves are processed, and even try Taiwan’s only sweet potato leaf tea.
