Starting from 2019, traveling to Japan will become more costly for Chinese tourists！ In addition to the already known departure tax, the long-delayed consumption tax will also increase from the current 8% to 10%, with implementation expected next October.

The issue of raising Japan’s consumption tax has been under discussion for a long time and has already been postponed twice. According to Japanese media reports, the matter is currently under review, and once approved, the tax hike will take effect in October 2019. Although foreign visitors can enjoy tax-free shopping once they reach a certain spending threshold, expenses such as accommodation and dining will inevitably increase.

Meanwhile, Osaka’s “accommodation tax,” which has been in place since 2017, is also set to expand its scope. According to current regulations, a 100-yen accommodation tax is levied on stays costing between 10,000 yen and less than 15,000 yen per night; 200 yen for stays between 15,000 yen and less than 20,000 yen; and 300 yen for stays above 20,000 yen.

According to data from Japanese authorities, the average cost of a one-night stay in Osaka is currently 7,200 yen. As a result, Osaka plans to broaden the scope of the accommodation tax, applying it to stays costing 7,000 yen or more per night. The expected increase in revenue will be used to improve the tourism environment, including multilingual services and wireless internet installation, thereby enhancing the quality of tourism.
