The new cultural and creative bookstore craze in Asia has been gaining momentum in recent years. Taiwan-based Eslite is not only expanding its presence into China but also moving into Japan. In partnership with Japanese real estate developer Mitsui Fudosan and the century-old bookstore “Yurindo,” Eslite is scheduled to open in the Mitsui Tower building in Nihonbashi-Muromachi, Tokyo, in the fall of 2019. It is expected to become a new local landmark and a popular tourist attraction.

This collaboration took four years of discussions. The partnership involves Eslite and Mitsui Fudosan jointly establishing a company, with the chain bookstore “Yurindo” taking over the licensed operation.

Mitsui Fudosan has a very positive impression of Eslite. Coupled with Mitsui’s involvement in the “Nihonbashi Revitalization Project,” the idea of bringing Eslite bookstore to Japan was initiated, emphasizing a shared vision between both parties for community development and the revitalization of craftsmanship.

Eslite has named this bookstore “Eslite Life Nihonbashi,” with a business area of nearly 900 tsubo (approximately 2,966 square meters). It will incorporate Taiwanese and Japanese cultural and creative brands as well as hands-on experience workshops, aiming to create “the largest hands-on workshop space in central Tokyo.” The opening plan includes inviting local Japanese craft artisans to participate, and organizing joint exhibitions to facilitate exchanges and sharing between Taiwanese local artisans and their Japanese counterparts.

Japan’s Tsutaya Books has also opened branches in Taiwan in recent years. A new wave of bookstore culture and lifestyle spaces is emerging across Asia. With frequent exchanges and travel between Taiwan and Japan, this collaboration has garnered much attention and is expected to drive both foot traffic and public interest.
