Many places in Taiwan host kite festivals. Following previous events in Hsinchu, Taoyuan, and the northern coast, the Miaoli Riverside Park will also hold one on October 20 and 21, gathering professional kite teams from across the country, as well as international teams from the UK, Germany, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, and mainland China to “come together and fly paper kites.”

The 2018 Miaoli Kite Festival was presented as a Hakka Kite Carnival, featuring kites based on Miaoli City’s mascot characters “Ah Di Gu” and “Tong Hua Mei” combined with the theme “Haven’t seen you in ages, how have you been?” (恁久好无an?giu?ho?moˇ). In addition to flying eight Hakka-themed kites such as Hakka bamboo hats and Hakka floral cloth dragons, there was also a specially planned “Hakka Bicycle Kite” that roamed the entire venue, giving everyone a taste of “Hakka-style” kites.

You can also enjoy a variety of colorful soft-shaped kites, dynamic kites, stunt kite formation shows, candy kites, ribbon kites, landscape kites, and other kites with characteristics from different countries, as well as large soft kites of superheroes, Catwoman, Batman, and others that children love—adding an international and diverse touch to the event.
In addition to Hakka-style kites, you can also enjoy various dynamic kites, stunt kite formation shows, ribbon kites, and large soft kites that children love, such as Superman.
In addition, the site also includes kite DIY activities, public flying experiences, Hakka language storytelling, red envelope giveaways, and other activities. There is also a highlight—the mysterious “kite photo booth.”
The Hakka Food Carnival features a variety of creative kite festival-exclusive Hakka snacks, traditional and authentic Hakka rice dishes, and specially launched Hakka bread.
At the venue, you can exchange 200 NT dollars for a limited-edition 2018 Miaoli kite (limited to 500 per day) and a 200 NT dollar cash food voucher. The venue offers free kite flying, a children’s play area, and free shuttle services. There is also an exhibition of Miaoli’s kite culture over the years displayed at Miaoli Railway Station and the event venue, running until October 21.
