The Orionid meteor shower is the most spectacular meteor shower of autumn. The Taipei Astronomical Museum said the Orionids are formed from debris left in the orbit of the famous Halley’s Comet, characterized by extremely fast-moving meteors. Under conditions of no light pollution and clear weather, it is estimated that more than 20 meteors can be seen per hour.

"The Orionid meteor shower" occurs annually and is one of the fastest meteor showers each year due to the high speed of the meteors. It also occasionally features fireballs, some of which leave persistent trails visible for several minutes, both of which are highlights of viewing the Orionids.

The Taipei Astronomical Museum noted that the Orionid meteor shower usually occurs between October and November, with its peak on the evening of the 20th to the 22nd. At that time, it is estimated that 20 to 25 meteors can be seen per hour. However, the first half of the night may be affected by moonlight, so the best observation time is between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. The public can choose locations with minimal light pollution and wide views to enjoy the meteor shower without any equipment.

If you want to watch the meteor shower, the National Taiwan Science Education Center also recommends viewing spots. In Taipei, they suggest Yehliu, Laomei, and Fugui Cape along the North Coast, or Guanshan in the Northeast Corner, as well as mountainous areas such as Jinguashi, Keelung Mountain, and Xiaozishan.

In central Taiwan, you can go to Hehuanshan, the New Central Cross-Island Highway, the Central Cross-Island Highway, and the high-altitude roads in Nantou accessible by car. For Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan areas, it is recommended to head to the New Central Cross-Island Highway, Alishan, and Jiashian in Tainan. Additionally, in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, Kenting is the best choice, with locations such as Dajianshan, Fulongkou, and Frog Rock being both safe and conveniently accessible. Eastern Taiwan, which already has less light pollution, offers even more options, including coastal spots like Shitoushi, Baxiantai, and Sanxian Cave, or Golden Bottle and Taitung’s Wangyue Slope — all great viewing points.
