Guam’s Most Heartbreaking Love Spot – A Man’s Facial Profile Visible Along the Coastline

Speaking of must-visit famous spots in Guam, Lover’s Cliff, which provides a high-altitude view of the coastline, is absolutely one of them. It has a poignant love story, offers sweeping views of Tumon Bay, and features a heart-shaped lock chain that symbolizes everlasting love, making it an important romantic spot for couples traveling to Guam.

The tragic legend of Lover’s Cliff dates back to the Spanish colonial era, when a noblewoman fell in love with a Chamorro man. Defying her father’s orders to marry a Spanish officer, she was left with no choice under his coercion. She and the Chamorro man arranged to meet on the high cliffs of Tumon Bay, tied their hair together, and jumped into the sea to symbolize their eternal bond. After they leapt, the man’s face became the shape of the coastline, while the woman’s figure turned into a massive rock that continues to guard the area.

Before entering Lover’s Cliff, you’ll see a giant sculpture of two people with their hair entwined. Beyond it, you can climb to the observation deck for scenic views. Chen Yaoen from the Taiwan Office of the Guam Visitors Bureau noted that many visitors feel it’s enough to just admire the site from the outside, but paying the $3 entry fee to access the exclusive observation deck is highly recommended, as it offers a full panoramic view of the coastline.

The exclusive observation deck at Lover’s Cliff features a specially designated wall where couples can hang heart-shaped locks. From the top of the deck, on the left side of the coastline, you can see the shape of a man’s profile, while on the right, a large rock resembles a woman gazing out at the sea, her hair flowing in the wind. Though the imagery may be imagined, the combination of the tragic love story gives Lover’s Cliff an undeniable aura of bittersweet beauty.
