We curry lovers are no strangers to Guruguru, having visited their flagship store next to Hanshin Department Store numerous times. When we heard they recently opened a new branch in Wujia, we just had to check it out. The shop specializes in affordable Japanese-style creative home cooking, with curry rice and N<饭最受欢迎,五甲店开幕对附近朋友来说是福音。

Staying true to the classic Japanese aesthetic, from the torii-style entrance to the individual decorations, you might momentarily think you’ve stepped into a real Japanese canteen.

Different area types attract different customer groups. The flagship store mainly draws younger crowds, while the Wujia branch sees many families. The dining space features unified counter seating — something familiar to those who have traveled in Japan. Uniquely, there’s actually a Japanese chef working here — he’s the shop owner’s husband, from Japan, not very fluent in Chinese, and can only communicate in Japanese.

First-time diners needn’t worry — besides detailed explanations from the staff, each seat also has cute four-panel manga to help you order. It’s really not difficult at all.

The Japanese-style menu is one of the shop’s features. Dishes are listed by number with both Chinese and Japanese names, plus vivid pictures. Shadow finds it the hardest menu to decide from, because every dish looks so delicious.

The back menu includes side dishes, drinks, and desserts, each with its own assigned number. When ordering, you just write the corresponding number on the form.

There’s an order sheet placed in front of each table. Use the pencil provided to write down the numbers of the dishes you want, then bring it to the counter to place your order and pay.

Each seat has some seasonings prepared in front of it.

Shredded cabbage sauce and free pickled vegetables are available for self-service.

The mildly spicy pickled veggies became our snack while waiting for our food.

The Nagoya-style red miso pork intestine stew set meal is exclusive to the Wujia branch. It was developed by the Japanese chef and adapted to suit Taiwanese tastes. Trial price: NT$178.

Besides pork intestine, it also includes tofu skin, vegetables, ??, and the broth carries the salty-savory aroma of red miso — rich and hearty, perfect with rice.

Ginger pork set meal NT$175

Shadow loves such simple set meals. The classic ginger pork is a familiar comfort dish, served with shredded cabbage, miso soup, and side dishes.

The shredded cabbage is piled up like a small mountain. Just shake the cabbage sauce on the table and drizzle it over — tangy with a hint of sesame flavor, so refreshing.

The miso soup shows the shop’s dedication, with added vegetables and pork slices, making the flavor richer.

Just looking at it is mouthwatering. The sweetness of the onion and the ten-month-aged ginger create a rich ginger sauce that enhances the pork flavor. The pork slices are thick and flavorful, perfect with rice.

The crystal-clear rice is Q-textured and full of moisture. Such tasty rice makes you want to eat extra scoops.

Land-Sea-Air Mountain Curry Rice NT$330

It really is a small mountain — no joke. The top layer is lobster salad, the middle is lettuce salad, and the base features a land-sea-air fried combo of chicken thigh, thick pork cutlet, and Japanese horse mackerel.

This is a special dish with an over-the-top portion. Probably only competitive eaters could finish it. From the horse mackerel to the thick pork cutlet, the quantities are generous — eating it almost feels like joining a Japanese eating contest.

We’ve always loved the shop’s curry rice. Even as an affordable dish, it’s made with care. The flavors are layered, and you can tell a lot of effort went into making it.

Most of the curry we’ve had is sweet Japanese-style. This one is rich and flavorful, plus there’s the bonus of soft, fluffy omelet — its silky texture sliding across your tongue is so satisfying.

Salsa-fried squid NT$65 / à la carte

The salsa here is a bit different from what we usually get. It has more Italian herb aroma and layered flavors. Combined with the chewy fried squid, it’s delicious.

Creamy Crab Korokke 110 TWD / à la carte

The crab legs are coated in creamy white sauce and fried to a crispy tenderness — kids are sure to love this.

Dried Bonito Lobster Salad Cold Tofu 45 TWD / à la carte

Soft tofu topped with a generous helping of lobster salad, enhanced with bonito sauce. This delicate dish offers a rich mix of flavors.

Pork & Vegetable Miso Soup and Appetizer Salad are available as add-ons. Options include: 30 TWD for two choices, 60 TWD for three, or 100 TWD for four — choose based on your appetite.

There aren’t many drink options. On the left is Fresh Milk Black Tea (55 TWD à la carte), on the right is Unsweetened Premium Green Tea (40 TWD à la carte).

The shop is now offering a promotion: buy one draft beer, get the second at half price. A great deal. (Excessive drinking is harmful to health.)

Matcha Ice Cream 45 TWD

The matcha ice cream has a rich and delicious flavor. It’s topped with red bean paste that still has some texture — my husband really liked this one.

As a curry rice specialty shop, this place delivers exceptional quality at a low price. Coupled with the cozy dining atmosphere, it’s definitely worth adding to the list for curry rice lovers. For those in southern Kaohsiung, there’s no need to travel all the way to the flagship store near Hanshin Department Store — there’s now a branch in Wujia for a more convenient meal. Highly recommended tasty curry rice for everyone.
