Hong Kong’s Michelin-listed humble eats restaurant expands overseas. “Gan’s Roast,” riding on the legacy of Yong Ji and its Michelin one-star reputation, is opening its fourth overseas branch. The new location will officially debut on December 5, drawing food lovers eager to try it first.

Established in 2014 in Hong Kong’s Wan Chai district, Gan’s Roast Goose was founded by Kam Shung Yuen, the third-generation descendant of the renowned Hong Kong restaurant Yong Ji. He inherited his grandfather’s recipes and brought along the original chefs from Yong Ji to start a new venture.

Thanks to its outstanding taste and affordable prices, it earned a Michelin one-star rating just four months after opening and has maintained this honor for the following four consecutive years.

Gan’s Roast, which is about to open at Taipei 101, offers very approachable prices: takeaway roast goose rice is NT$220, while a half roast duck for dine-in is NT$1020. In addition to the signature roast duck, there are also delicious char siu, roast pork, soy sauce chicken, noodle salads, and side dishes for diners to choose from.
The hand-shredded cucumber in the restaurant is a small dish that foodies shouldn’t miss.
Because local Taiwanese geese are generally leaner and lack sufficient fat, they can’t replicate the flavor of the original Hong Kong store. Therefore, just like in Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the focus in Taiwan is on other types of roasted meats. Although you can't always enjoy the classic roast goose, you can still savor other specialty roasted meats at the store.
