Pet owners often worry about how to care for their pets while traveling. What if you could bring your pet along?
New York’s JFK Airport recently announced plans to renovate some of its unused terminals and build the world’s first animal-only terminal. Named “The Ark,” it is expected to be completed in 2016 and will be able to accommodate 70,000 animals annually.
The Ark is designed to house various types of animals, with the most luxurious facilities for dogs, including a swimming pool and spa, at around $100 per day.
However, if you’re traveling from Hong Kong, it’s essential to understand the regulations of different airlines before bringing your pet. For example, Cathay Pacific states on its website that “no pets are allowed as checked baggage; they must be transported as cargo,” while KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) indicates that “small cats and dogs may be brought into the economy class cabin on most KLM flights and into the business class cabin on most KLM intra-European flights,” subject to certain conditions.
Additionally, generally speaking, pets must be at least 8 weeks old to fly and must have proper vaccinations and a veterinary certificate confirming they are healthy within 10 days prior to the flight. It is also recommended to place food and water in the pet carrier for self-access, and many advise against feeding your pet during the flight to prevent mid-air elimination or vomiting.
