What exactly are aging and death? Birth, aging, sickness, and death are inevitable stages of life, but how you live and where you live are choices you can make. Just like Lady Sorrel Bentinck in this story – at the age of 73, her age is not a barrier. She chose to go to India alone and embark on a journey in a foreign land.
Going to India alone didn’t mean this grandma was fearless or unafraid of death. She had read some negative news about India, but that wasn’t why she hesitated — because she said if she were truly afraid, she wouldn’t have chosen to travel alone.
Her trip had no fixed plans; aside from the flight and hotel, everything else was spontaneous, all to capture fleeting moments of emotion — like watching the sunset in the White Desert, being invited to sing with locals, and even sharing Scottish Highland dance steps with her new friends.
During the trip, the grandma also encountered various problems, such as twisting her ankle and being attacked by monkeys, but along the way, she met many interesting new people. More importantly, she fulfilled her desire for adventure and found clarity within herself.
Remember Tolstoy’s great work, the book titledTThe Death of Ivan Ilyich,which describes one of the most ordinary yet most terrifying “lives.” The protagonist is a judge who lived his life by the rules, but never thought about the kind of life he truly wanted. He studied hard, got married, and raised children all to meet societal expectations. Only when death approached did he suddenly realize how empty his life had been.
This grandma’s story reminds us to stay true to our hearts and live the life we want.
