A felt earthquake occurred at 21:24 on December 12, with the epicenter located 13.3 kilometers southwest of Hualien County Government and a depth of 12 kilometers. The Richter magnitude was 4.9.

The highest seismic intensity reached level 6, recorded in Tongmen, Hualien County, with level 4 felt in Hualien City and Hualien County. On the same evening, another felt earthquake with a Richter magnitude of 3.7 occurred at 19:37, with the epicenter in Liugui, Kaohsiung City. No damage has been reported so far. Meanwhile, a hundred-meter-long section of the mountain wall at the Hualien Air Force radar station collapsed, causing local residents to worry that further earthquakes may cause more collapses. Particular caution is advised around dangerous buildings or construction sites.
