The coastline of Tai O in Hong Kong once witnessed the appearance of "Blue Tears," sparking a wave of interest among travelers. However, it turns out that Matsu’s Beihai Tunnel on Nangan Island has already offered nighttime "Blue Tears" viewing tours since last year. This year, the tourism bureau has extended the season from April 1 to October 31.
From around April to September each year, the coastal waters of Matsu often shimmer with waves of blue luminescence. This unique maritime phenomenon is referred to as "Blue Tears" and has attracted numerous "tear-chasers" to admire or photograph it, making it a precious tourism asset for Matsu.
However, spotting the Blue Tears in Matsu depends on factors such as tides, sea currents, and wind direction. Compared to the open sea, the probability is higher inside Beihai Tunnel. During the tour, visitors paddle through the dark tunnel in small boats, where countless Blue Tears illuminate the water—a truly breathtaking sight.
This year, boat operators have invested in purchasing four new, wider boats with more seating. Additionally, indicator lights have been installed at tunnel bends to enhance safety. The "Blue Tears" phenomenon occurs when dinoflagellates, ostracods, or bioluminescent plankton in the seawater emit light due to disturbance from the tides.
