When traveling in Hokkaido, most people think of starting from Sapporo. There’s a simple reason for that: currently, the only direct flight from Hong Kong to Hokkaido arrives at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo. However, Hokkaido is a vast region, and starting your journey from Kushiro to explore Eastern Hokkaido is equally rewarding.
Recently, upon invitation from the Hokkaido Tourism Board, I embarked on a trip starting from Kushiro, taking in the eastern parts of Hokkaido—visiting spots like Lake Akan, Lake Mashu, Abashiri, Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and Asahikawa. The experience was incredibly rich, and if you have extra time, the journey onward to Furano from Asahikawa isn’t far either.
The first stop on the itinerary was Lake Akan. Aside from its well-known hot spring town, the nearby Ainu Village near the hot spring area is home to numerous shops selling artisan goods. The Ainu are Japan’s only ethnic minority, traditionally making a living through fishing and hunting. They favor wood as a material to craft various everyday items. Visiting in winter, when the ground is covered in snow, adds a poetic charm to the experience.
Lake Akan has a circumference of 26 kilometers, and its ice can be as thick as 1 meter in winter. Though it gives off a serene vibe, there’s more to do than just admiring the stillness—there are plenty of dynamic activities available. Ice sailing, ice motorcycles, and banana boat rides are some of the popular activities here.
Speeding across the ice while gazing at the majestic Mount Oakan ahead, with breathtaking scenery and an adrenaline-pumping sense of speed, makes for a truly unique experience.
For those who prefer something more tranquil, ice fishing is also an option. Though it requires patience and doesn’t always yield results, it can be just as fulfilling if you enjoy it.
