The southern and western parts of Taipei are like a city museum that showcases humanity and the overall living environment. In areas such as Beitou, Dadaocheng, Monga, and Ximending, we can experience the unique charm of the city where old and new blend together. This weekend, take your parents out for a stroll to enjoy these charming old districts.

1. Beitou
Beitou is the birthplace of Taiwan’s hot spring history, boasting abundant hot spring resources. You can enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere while dining at the Japanese-style Beitou Cultural Artifacts Museum, then head up through Beitou Park and to Taipei’s most beautiful Beitou Library, before continuing to the Beitou Hot Springs Valley for some great photos. After looping back, go down to Beitou Market for a delicious meal of local cuisine.

2. Ximending
Ximending gets its name from the administrative district planning during the Japanese colonial period and is one of Taipei’s earliest entertainment hubs. The Evergreen Building, which sells just about everything, the Ximen Red House known for its frequent cultural and art events, and the movie street that developed around the Shaw Brothers Theatre are all major features of Ximending. There are also many nostalgic eateries that can bring your parents back to their childhood memories.

3. Monga
The culturally rich Wanhua District area of Monga boasts a wealth of traditional cultural history and local delicacies. Centuries-old historic sites scattered among its alleys can instantly transport you back to the late Qing and early Republican era, and it has been the filming location for many movies. The Peipailiao Block in the area is one of the last remaining Qing Dynasty streets in Taipei, making it a perfect spot to bring your parents for worship, walks, and delicious food.

4. Dadaocheng
Dadaocheng played an important role as a commercial hub in history and was the most bustling center of material distribution in Taiwan during the late Qing Dynasty. To this day, it retains many foreign firm buildings. After maintenance and innovation, Dadaocheng has successfully transformed into a hub with many art and culture shops. The area’s traditional local cuisine and temples are also must-experience cultural highlights.
