Recently, Europe has been hit by severe flooding, and the French capital, Paris, has also experienced its highest water levels in a century, breaking records since 1836. Over a hundred years ago, Paris was also affected by floods when the Seine River swelled, turning the city into a watery landscape. Artist Julien Knez has juxtaposed photos from a century ago with those of today’s Paris, taking you on a journey through the city's past and present.
In response to the flooding, French authorities have taken appropriate precautions. The Louvre, for instance, has moved artworks to higher floors. Its most prized treasure, the “Mona Lisa,” which is already housed in an upper-level exhibition hall, is temporarily not at risk. However, the flood has more or less affected urban transportation. If you’re planning to visit Paris this week, please stay extra vigilant.
