A 350-year-old temple in Tainan—the earliest Wangye (Royal Lord) temple in Taiwan, Fucheng Puzhi Temple’s Weiling King Chi Fu Qiansui—organized its first Fucheng Puzhi Temple Lantern Festival in 2012. With stunning painted lanterns hanging high, it gradually earned widespread acclaim online, and this year’s exhibition will run from December 19 to 30.

This year’s festival will feature all the lanterns from the past five years of Puzhi Lantern Festivals, arranged in a long tunnel. Walking through it feels like stepping into a time capsule of Puzhi Lantern Festival memories, with thousands of lanterns on display at once, dazzling and spectacular under the night sky.

Previous festivals were held on Guohua Street, but this year’s exhibition is near Garden Night Market, on Haian Road. The event runs for just two weeks, with the lights turning on at 5 PM and staying on until midnight.

The Puzhi Temple Lantern Festival once faced cancellation due to funding shortages, but thanks to support from across the country, a crowdfunding campaign was launched to ensure the sustainable preservation of Taiwan’s faith and cultural traditions. In 2017, the festival was held in Osaka for the first time and received great praise. This year, Tainan has been invited again to participate in Osaka’s “Feast of Light” Lantern Festival, making it the first overseas city to be invited in the event’s 15-year history.

Temple festivals are also a microcosm of culture and art. On the final day of the exhibition, December 30, there will be activities such as the “Grab the Pole” competition, Yu Meiren’s Super Celebrity List, a large-scale universal salvation ceremony, and the Lantern Dragon Tunnel, immersing you in Tainan’s cultural and folk art atmosphere.
