The predecessor of the SL Ginga was the now-defunct “SL Ginga Dorikuro 0 Series,” which was later revived as a limited express train. Due to severe damage from the earthquake in the region, it had to be completely rebuilt before being put back into service. Since 2014, it has been operating between Kamaishi and Hanamaki in Japan’s Tohoku region, running for approximately 80 days each year.
The interior design of the train was led by Iwate Prefecture’s renowned designer, Masayuki Kon, with the theme “Traveling through Dreams.” The locomotive features a retro and nostalgic design, puffing white steam as it runs, while the carriages behind boast a modern yet romantic aesthetic. The blend of old and new styles gives the train a unique charm.
Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that each carriage has a different thematic exterior design — the first carriage is Scorpio-themed, with corresponding special events arranged inside. The second, third, and fourth carriages are Sagittarius-, Aquila-, and Cygnus-themed respectively, each showcasing works and books by the author Kenji Miyazawa. Additionally, the interior design is inspired by the Taisho and Showa eras, featuring gas lamps, stained glass, and traditional crafts from Iwate Prefecture, all contributing to a strong historical ambiance. The ticket price is also more affordable compared to the Seven Stars in Kyushu; the fare along with a reserved seat costs about 1,600 yen for a roughly 2.5-hour journey.
However, “SL Ginga” tickets are not currently available for purchase overseas. To buy one, you can visit a JR East Travel Service Center in Tokyo or Shinjuku, or the nearest View Plaza travel service center.
