In Chihshang, Taitung, 30 years ago, this was just a small tree used to tie up cattle. Later, when EVA Air shot an “I SEE YOU” commercial starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, this little tree became overnight the widely known “Takeshi Kaneshiro Tree,” attracting countless visitors who come to pay homage.
And in Taichung, there’s also a “Takeshi Kaneshiro Tree” located in Nantun District. This century-old banyan tree has drawn attention in recent years due to its striking resemblance [to the one in Taitung]. Research reveals that this banyan, nestled amid lush green rice fields, has a history of over 100 years. Locals call it “Qingrong Gong” (Green Banyan Lord) and have built a small shrine to worship it. The surrounding rice field ridges are manually built with stone embankments, giving off a uniquely quaint charm.
An ordinary little tree can become an overnight sensation not just because of celebrity effect, but because of its own appeal. And for a tree to stand tall for a hundred years, apart from its own vitality, the surrounding environment plays a big role too. Actually, the same goes for us as writers — one minute on stage takes ten years of practice off stage. For me, I don’t wish to become famous overnight, but I hope to have the same enduring vitality as this old banyan tree and continue to grow.
