With three days left until the New Year’s Eve countdown, the Kaohsiung City Government Tourism Bureau has launched a series of New Year’s Eve events, inviting locals and tourists to bid farewell to the last sunset of 2018 across Taiwan, as well as welcome the first light of dawn in 2019, with new Kaohsiung Mayor Kuo Ying-chih also joining the activities on site.

On New Year’s Eve afternoon, at one of the most beautiful sunset viewing spots—West District Bay Viewing Platform—wait for the sun to set while enjoying performances by the “Neo-Classical Chamber Orchestra” together with an a cappella vocal group, then gently bid farewell to the last sunset of 2018 across Taiwan. After the sunset send-off, there will be a lively New Year’s Eve party featuring performances by popular singers, with everyone counting down together to welcome 2019.

After the New Year’s Eve party, welcome the first light of dawn in 2019. The first item on Mayor Kuo Ying-chih’s schedule on New Year’s Day is to visit his registered residence—Linhai District in Kaohsiung City—to watch the stunning and radiant sunrise at the mouth of the Gaoping River. Near No. 32 Dongshan Road in Linhai District, there is a hibiscus tiliaceus tree located exactly at the southernmost latitude and longitude of Kaohsiung, referred to as the “southernmost tree of the city.” From the location of the hibiscus tiliaceus, you can gaze at the Dawu Mountain, making it another perfect spot to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise in Kaohsiung.
