Outdoor Sprains: Proper and Quick Treatment Methods

Today, TraLu will introduce to everyone the treatment methods for outdoor sprains. What is a sprain? A sprain occurs when a joint is forcefully twisted, causing the tearing of the joint capsule, ligaments, and tendons attached to the outside of the joint. Sprains most commonly occur in the ankle, wrist, and lower back. A sprain in the lower back is what is commonly referred to as a pulled waist or gas-stuck waist.

Pain is an inevitable symptom, while swelling, skin bruising, and inability to move the joint are common manifestations of a sprain.

First Aid Measures

1. If you sprain your finger during sports, you should immediately stop the activity. The first step is cold compressing—ice is best. But if you’re not prepared, water can be used as a substitute. Soak the finger in cold water for about 15 minutes, then wrap it with a cold, damp cloth. Secure the finger in an extended position with adhesive tape. If the swelling and pain persist after a week, a fracture may have occurred, and you must seek medical treatment.

2. In the case of an ankle sprain, the first priority is rest. Elevate the lower leg using a pillow. You can apply Qī Lí Sǎn (a traditional Chinese medicinal powder) mixed with tea or alcohol to the injured area, then bandage it.

3. A waist sprain also requires rest. Apply a cold compress to the affected area, try to find a comfortable position—either lying on your side or lying flat on your back with the knees slightly bent and a blanket or similar item under them. After the pain subsides, it’s best to have a doctor treat you at home.

Precautions

1. For a lumbar muscle sprain, the most important thing is to stay still. Rushing to the hospital in a panic can worsen the condition. Improper handling may lead to recurrent episodes and possibly develop into a herniated disc.

2. To prevent another ankle sprain, raise the outer rear half of your shoe sole by half a centimeter (i.e., attach a piece of rubber or plastic on the outside) to protect the ligaments.

3. Those with a waist sprain should sleep on a firm mattress, wear a wide waist belt, and exercise the lumbar muscles.
