The sea glows with shimmering blue light in the darkness. From April to September each year, it’s the season of the Matsu Blue Tears. Spotting the “Blue Tears” is often a matter of luck, as it depends on external factors such as temperature, wind direction, moonlight, ocean currents, and tides. Only under the right conditions can you witness this magical spectacle.
In fact, “Blue Tears” aren’t unique to Matsu—they can also be seen in Kinmen, Hong Kong, Macau, the Maldives, and Vaadhoo Island—but the frequency of sightings in Matsu, Taiwan, is particularly high.
During the war, Matsu transformed from a simple fishing village into a major military stronghold. Now, having shed its wartime role, it has returned to its former simplicity. Historical sites and military structures such as Iron Fort and underground tunnels have become distinctive features of Matsu and also serve as striking backdrops for Blue Tears photography.
There are multiple viewing spots across the Matsu Islands where you can see the Blue Tears.
Beigan: Maibi Bay, Tanghou Beach, Qiaozai Village, Luobangshan, Banli Beach Nangan: Dahang Outpost, Jinsha Beach, Hanlin Cape, Shanlong Seawall, Furong’ao Dongju: Fuzheng Beach, Lighthouse (Qingshan Islet), Dapu Stone Carvings, Meng’ao Pier
Xiju: Caipu’ao, Kunwu Beach, Qingfan Harbor Outer Breakwater
Dongyin: Northwest of Zhongzhu Islet, Beiao, Hou’ao
Please note that these outposts are abandoned military camps, so exercise caution when visiting at night.
