Basic Knowledge of Outdoor Hiking

When you first start hiking, everything takes time to progress step by step. If you are new to outdoor hiking, don’t rush things. Below are some principles introduced by our editor at TanLuLv that can serve as useful references for beginners in outdoor hiking.

1. Always hike at your own pace: Don’t push yourself too hard and walk too fast, as this will exhaust your energy quickly and may end up slowing you down. If you are hiking with a group, try to find someone who hikes at a similar speed.

2. Scientifically assess your physical fitness: For your first few hikes, it’s best to focus on walking for several hours rather than planning to cover a certain distance. After getting a sense of your capabilities through these initial hikes, you can gradually increase the intensity of your trekking.
3. Don’t just focus on walking and miss the scenery around you: While outdoor hiking is good for fitness, it’s not about pushing yourself to the limit. Sometimes, overexerting yourself is not worth the effort. Remember, the most suitable hiking pace is one that allows you to maintain it throughout the day.

4. Learn the technique of restful walking: Everyone has their own walking style. When hiking, use a method that feels comfortable for you so your energy can be used efficiently and scientifically.
5. “Eat and drink more” while hiking: Eating and drinking more doesn’t mean overindulging. Eating too much might actually prevent you from walking. Here, it refers to the frequency of eating and drinking. During hiking, your body loses a lot of heat, and to replenish energy, it’s important to timely consume water and food. Drink a bit more water before climbing steep slopes. On hot days with heavy sweating, consider adding a little salt to your drinking water.
6. Pay attention to resting scientifically during your hike: Generally, take a 10-minute break after every 50 minutes of walking. Adjust this according to your personal condition.
