Beijing Natural History Museum
Located on the central axis in the Tianqiao area of southern Beijing, it stands against the World Heritage-listed Temple of Heaven Park and faces the modern Tianqiao Theater. Originally established as the Preparatory Office of the Central Natural History Museum, it was officially renamed the Beijing Natural History Museum in 1962. It was the first large-scale natural history museum built independently by New China, focusing on specimen collection, scientific research, and science education in fields such as paleontology, zoology, botany, and anthropology. The museum houses around 200,000 specimens, including a significant number of nationally protected Class I and II animal and plant specimens. Many of these are rare both in China and internationally, featuring world-renowned fossils such as the ancient Yellow River elephant skull, the 26-meter-long Mamenchisaurus, one of the world’s earliest birds—the Sinothomisus zhengi, and complete sets of fossilized dinosaur eggs. The museum currently features four major permanent exhibitions: Paleontology, Botany, Zoology, and Anthropology. These four exhibits together present a panoramic view of life on Earth, using biological evolution as the main thread and biodiversity as the key theme to promote life science knowledge to the public. The Beijing Natural History Museum is located on the east side of Tianqiao South Street. You can take Bus No. 2 or BRT Line 1 from Qianmen and get off at Tianqiao West Gate Station. Admission to the museum is free, but you’ll need to present an ID card to collect your ticket. There are numerous exhibition halls covering everything from fossils billions of years old to contemporary biological specimens. Among them, the Dinosaur Fossil Exhibition Hall is the most popular, attracting many children. Every exhibition area in the Beijing Natural History Museum is accompanied by very detailed descriptions, specimens, and real objects. A visitor map is available at the information desk near the entrance, so you can plan your visit according to your interests. Be sure not to just rush through the exhibits.
