Located at the Sheraton Hotel in Onna, Okinawa, a new Zipline cable flight experience opened this year. It spans 250 meters and is 13 meters above the ground—about the height of five floors. Unlike jungle Ziplines in other countries, Okinawa’s seaside Zipline highlights ocean views. Starting from an elevated platform, you soar above the Okinawan sea with the ocean breeze in your face. Each ride takes about 30 seconds, requires no special skills, and is suitable even for children.
Upon arriving at the Sheraton Hotel, walk through the lobby to the Nuchigusui Activity Building. Purchase your ticket at the service desk next to the Zipline platform, then queue up under the Zipline tower with your voucher. Staff will assist you in putting on the gear. You may bring a camera, but only those worn on the head or wrist are allowed. Other valuables can be kept in a zippered pocket on your person.
As someone who’s afraid of heights and trying Zipline for the first time, I was a bit nervous while waiting on the platform. But the moment I slid off, it felt absolutely amazing. There wasn’t much centrifugal force, the process was smooth and safe, and a lot of fun. Flying over the sandy beach in just 30 seconds and gazing at the blue-green sea made me wish I could stay up there longer.
After reaching the end of the ride, staff assisted me in getting back to shore. One of them pulled me back with great effort, and once my safety buckle was released, I walked along the coastal path for about five minutes to the activity center to return the gear.
Each Zipline ride costs 1,500 yen per person. There’s also a discounted rate, but availability depends on luck—as strong winds can lead to closures. Last time I went, I had to wait two days for good weather. Next to the Zipline is GoFall, a small bungee jumping attraction. There’s a combo ticket discount if you challenge both activities.
Next to the activity center, there are several hammocks where you can relax even if you’re not doing the Zipline.
