In Tainan’s Yanshui, the most well-known event every New Year is the century-old traditional folk activity “Yanshui Beehive Rockets.” But besides the Beehive Rockets, the “Moon Harbor Lantern Festival,” which blends the charm of the town with light art, is also an unmissable artistic event, showcasing the unique beauty of Yanshui through light art.

Since its first edition in 2010, the Moon Harbor Lantern Festival has seen participation from 242 art teams and artists, with visitor numbers growing from less than 20,000 in the beginning to an average of nearly 600,000 in recent years. The Tainan City Government, along with the curatorial team and artists, has transformed Moon Harbor into a romantic town of light art, installing light art installations along the winding waterways to illuminate Moon Harbor.

The curatorial theme of the 2019 Moon Harbor Lantern Festival is “Breathe with the Light,” showcasing how the charming ancient town of Yanshui also has its own pace, moving slowly forward and exuding the town’s unique character.Each year, the Moon Harbor Lantern Festival features a different theme, bringing different lights of Taiwanese art and making contemporary art more accessible to the public, encouraging people to think about “light” in new ways.
