Emirates Airlines conducted a “Children’s In-flight Behavior Survey” among 500 Taiwanese parents to understand how children behave on planes and what in-flight services parents value most.

Taiwanese kids show more patience than British children
Taiwanese parents don’t need to envy British moms for being better at handling kids. Compared to a 2017 Emirates survey in the UK, British children start asking, “Are we nearly there yet?” after about 49 minutes, while Taiwanese children only begin to show impatience after 56 minutes on board. Taiwanese children’s behavior on flights isn’t inferior to that of British kids. This finding contradicts the concerns of many Taiwanese parents who worry their children might misbehave on planes, deterring them from traveling abroad with their kids.

Why are parents reluctant to travel abroad with their children?
The survey found that nearly 80% of parents without prior flying experience with their children feel very worried about taking a flight with them — concerned about children feeling unwell during the flight (63%), disturbing other passengers (58%), and the child being too young to remember the trip (54%). Among them, 34% even feel that traveling abroad with kids would prevent them from relaxing and enjoying the trip, thus reducing their willingness to fly with their children. The younger the child, the greater the parental concern. However, the survey also shows that once children reach the age of 7, the worry level of parents who have previously traveled with kids drops significantly to below 40%. Parents might consider planning longer trips as their children grow older, which could help reduce anxiety. Children will also develop more anticipation for the trip, making it an unforgettable shared memory for both parents and kids.

Spacious seats and affordable fares greatly boost parents’ willingness to take long-haul flights with kids
According to the Emirates survey, over 50% of Taiwanese parents cite spacious seating as their top need when flying with children. Over 40% of parents say discounted fares would further increase their willingness to travel abroad with their kids, and around 30% believe a range of cartoons and in-flight entertainment options are essential for flying with children. Only 8.5% of Taiwanese parents have taken a flight longer than 8 hours with their children. However, if airlines offer more spacious seating, delicious kids' meals, promotional fares, a variety of toys, audiovisual entertainment, or dedicated kids’ spaces on board, the willingness of Taiwanese parents to travel to Europe and the Middle East with their children increases significantly to 25%.
