When it comes to Aomori Prefecture in Japan, many people think of sweet Fuji apples and stunning natural scenery. In addition to these, the area is also home to a uniquely named hot spring — the Furofushi (Immortal) Hot Spring. Located in Kanegasaki, Aomori Prefecture, Furofushi Hot Spring not only faces the Sea of Japan but is also the place in all of Japan closest to the setting sun. At dusk, as the sun slowly descends and its afterglow spills across the ocean, it’s truly a sight that everyone should witness at least once in their lifetime.
The open-air bath at Furofushi Hot Spring has a gourd-shaped exterior that blends seamlessly with the Sea of Japan. The hot spring water, rich in iron, has a distinctive earthy yellow hue. Guests can soak in the bath while admiring the vast, boundless beauty of the Sea of Japan. It is a mixed-gender hot spring, but there is now also a dedicated women-only bath nearby, so female visitors can relax without worry.
Travelers wishing to visit can take the JR Gonō Line to “Wespa Tsuganomori” Station and then transfer to the free shuttle bus to reach Furofushi Hot Spring. Additionally, the hot spring is only available for use between sunrise and sunset and is closed at night. On days with severe weather, it may be temporarily closed, so visitors should check the weather conditions before heading out.
