2019 is almost here. Are cross-year events such as year-end dinners or fireworks shows starting to feel a bit tiring for you? With this year’s four-day cross-year holiday approaching, where should you go? This time, we’ve compiled a list of all the 2019 cross-year events across Taiwan. Whether you’re planning to count down to the New Year or greet the first light of dawn, don’t miss out on this event info—add these ideas to make your New Year celebration even more memorable and exciting !

The North Coast has always been one of the best spots for chasing the sunrise, and Bitou Cape, with its spectacular geological landscapes, is also one of the top three spots in Ruifang for viewing the sunrise during the cross-year holiday. Standing high above at Bitou Cape, you can enjoy the breathtaking seascape where the ocean meets the sky, perfectly welcoming the arrival of the new year — what a refreshing way to start fresh !

The Bitou Cape Trail is located within Bitou Cape Park and consists of three interconnected trails: the Coastal Line, Lighthouse Line, and Ridge Valley Line. Among them, the most beloved is the hillside green space known as Wangyue Slope. Here, you can stargaze and moon-gaze, and it's even a great idea to camp nearby the day before and count down to the New Year with friends !

The most famous and well-attended cross-year event in Northern Taiwan is undoubtedly the Taipei 101 fireworks show. However, the Fulong Greeting-the-Sunrise event in the Northeast Coast is also a spectacular and grand cross-year celebration. After all, people rarely have the leisure to watch the sunrise on regular days, but on New Year’s Eve, everyone has the rare chance to gather and celebrate together—even if it’s crowded, it’s still joyful ! Therefore, the Fulong Greeting-the-Sunrise event is always lively every year, complete with live band performances to hype up the atmosphere. At the moment the first light breaks through the sky in the early morning, you’ll feel incredibly energized no matter how tired you are ~

After a five-year hiatus, the Sun Moon Lake Evening Gala finally made a grand comeback last year, featuring a series of lively activities throughout the day and night, such as blessings, charity lock sales, handmade markets, and more. The evening gala featured dual stages for singing and performance acts, and it all ended perfectly with an incredibly dazzling fireworks show. Who knows what exciting cross-year events the 2019 Sun Moon Lake Gala will bring ?

While waiting for the latest updates on the 2019 Sun Moon Lake Gala, why not plan your cross-year itinerary in advance ? We recommend that after watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks, you can head to Golden Dragon Mountain near Sun Moon Lake to greet the sunrise ! Only such an energetic plan can bring full vitality to the new year !

Taiwan’s highest-altitude cross-year gala takes place in Qingjing ! Qingjing is not just a farm—it also gathers huge crowds during the cross-year season because every year the Qingjing Gala features a unique theme and incorporates indigenous singing and dancing. It gets livelier as the night goes on. Plus, when the weather is clear, you can see a sky full of twinkling stars and the moon, making New Year’s celebrations under such a beautiful natural setting feel like being in a fairyland, healing and refreshing.

Compared to Qingjing’s high-altitude gala, Erliau’s Greeting-the-Sunrise event is one of the lowest-altitude spots in Taiwan where you can see both the sunrise and sea of clouds. Its accessibility gives it an advantage for enjoying the sunrise scenery, which is why it attracts large crowds every New Year’s. Therefore, the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration implements crowd control, and last year they only issued 3,000 mountain entry permits, which were snapped up at an unexpectedly fast rate. So, for those wanting to experience Erliau’s 360-degree panoramic view in 2019, it’s wise to prepare in advance. Check the related official sites below for more details.

Most cross-year events are either nighttime galas or early-morning sunrise greetings, but a rather unique one is the “Sending off the Sunset” event in Tai Nan’s North Gate. On December 31, the last day of 2018, people gathered at the salt fields, watching dance performances while reflecting on their efforts over the past year. The act of sending off the sunset also filled everyone with energy to move forward with drive in 2019 !

When it comes to Alishan, what attracts people the most are the small trains and the sunrise. In celebration of the New Year, Alishan is specially hosting the “Sunrise Impression Concert.” The golden sunrise in Alishan already draws large crowds of tourists throughout the year, but on New Year’s Eve, you can also enjoy soul-stirring symphonic performances that cleanse the spirit. As you reflect on the year’s experiences, you can welcome 2019 with joy. Such a New Year’s Eve event in 2019 is sure to bring you a unique kind of inspiration.

Every year, Taipei hosts the 101 Fireworks Show for New Year’s Eve, while Hualien also has a fixed New Year event – the Hualien Pacific Tourism Festival. We believe if you choose to spend a four-day holiday in Hualien, you might be looking to escape the stressful environment and find some time for self-reflection. But on New Year’s Day, why not check out the Hualien Pacific Tourism Festival? Though it also features concerts and fireworks like Taipei, the Hualien Pacific Tourism Festival doesn’t have the same crowded atmosphere. Instead, it’s a great place to fully enjoy music and the festive mood of the New Year!

The detailed program for the Hualien Pacific Tourism Festival has not yet been announced. To find out which guests will be performing at the 2019 New Year’s events, please visit the 2018–2019 Pacific Tourism Festival page!

If you want to escape even further, head to Taitung’s Taimali. The Taimali sunrise could easily be called the most beautiful in all of Taiwan. Watching the sun slowly rise above the horizon, with its growing brightness reflecting on the sea, feels like a new hope for the entire year. In addition, Taitung’s Taimali also holds a New Year’s Day beach run every year. After watching the sunrise, you can keep the excitement going and deeply appreciate Taimali’s beauty through running. But remember, New Year’s Eve is very cold, so be sure to dress warmly!

To see the first ray of sunlight in Taiwan, head to Sanxiantai. When the sky turns yellow-orange and sunlight spills over the sea and the Sanxiantai arch bridge, the scene before your eyes becomes like a painting, prompting non-stop shutter clicks and exclamations. After welcoming the sunrise, you can also visit the island of Sanxiantai, climb the white lighthouse to gaze at the sea view, and observe natural treasures such as peculiar rocks and coral reefs. Ringing in the New Year in eastern Sanxiantai offers both sensory and intellectual rewards.

In addition to welcoming the sunrise, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration also held concerts, lucky draws, and beach clean-up activities on the island of Sanxiantai last year. It’s certain that the 2018–19 Sanxiantai sunrise event will be even more spectacular!
