Affordable and Popular Japanese-Style Curry Rice in Kaohsiung – A Flavorful and Spicy Treat!

Published: 2026-09-25 👁 100 views
Last updated 2026-09-25 — The predecessor of Tengu Curry was the KATSU Shō Japanese N< Rice we previously tried. After relocating from Linsen to Fuxing 2nd Road, it was renamed Tengu Curry in May this year. The newly renovated space boasts an even stronger Japanese vibe, such as the torii gate and lighting at the entrance. Even before the name change, the shop primarily served curry and N< rice, but its overall image wasn’t as distinctly Japanese as it is now.

The predecessor of Tengu Curry was the KATSU Shō Japanese N<饭,从林森一路搬至复兴二路后,在今年五月时已更名为天狗咖喱家。重新装潢后的店面日式风更浓厚,像是门口的鸟居与灯饰。其实店家未改名之前也是主打咖喱、N<饭,只是当时整间店在形象上,不像现在这么有日式fu。

The dining area maintains a counter-style seating arrangement, similar to a Japanese canteen, allowing diners to clearly see the kitchen and creating a closer connection with the staff.

Flipping through the menu might feel familiar—actually, Tengu and Guruguru, both curry-focused eateries, are owned by brothers, so their menus and offerings are quite similar. Dishes are labeled with both Chinese and Japanese names and identified by numeric codes.

Set meals, curry rice, N<饭是店家主打料理,除了单点,还有超值组合餐加价购,30元二选一或70元三选二。

Just fill in the code for your main dish. You can also choose between sweet or spicy curry. Once you've made your selection, head to the counter to order and pay. Seasonings and complimentary side dishes are available on the table.

Great value combo meal – add 70 NT$ for a choice of two: we picked a vegetable and fruit salad and a pork and vegetable miso soup.

Crispy Fried Egg Tofu – 45 NT$

The crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside egg tofu is absolutely delicious, especially when dipped in the sweet Japanese sauce.

Osaka-Style Pancake with Handmade Pan-Fried Dumplings – 100 NT$

We felt the bonito flakes were a bit excessive, as the dumplings are clearly the star.

The filling of the pan-fried dumplings has more veggies, and while the seasoning isn’t bad, it’s just okay.

Rich Cheese Sauce Hiroshima-Style Pancake with Soft-Scrambled Eggs, Thick-Cut Pork Cutlet, and Flying Bonito Flakes Mixed Curry Rice – 230 NT$

Beneath the rich cheese sauce is a layer of Japanese-style onion soft-scrambled eggs, paired with thick-cut pork cutlet and dancing bonito flakes. Visually, it’s satisfying and appetite-whetting. You can taste the blend of onion scramble and curry, offering a rich flavor. It would be even better if the scrambled eggs were slightly less salty.

The thick-cut pork cutlet is topped not only with our chosen sweet curry but also with rich cheese and the shop’s homemade Hiroshima-style sauce. The multiple layers of flavor and generous portion make it very filling.

Pan-Fried Cumin Chicken Thigh Curry Set Meal – 199 NT$

The pork and vegetable miso soup is a signature of this series of shops. The ingredients are quite substantial, though the flavor varies in intensity. The Guruguru version tastes better, while Tengu’s is slightly milder.

Shredded cabbage drizzled with sauce offers a refreshing and appetizing taste.

This dish features spicy curry, which isn’t overly hot but very appetizing. Compared to the previous sweet curry, the spicy one seems to win our hearts more.

The chicken thigh meat is tender and juicy, with aromatic cumin notes, and the crispy surface is mouthwatering.

The restaurant uses domestic sushi rice, which is fluffy, chewy, moist, and delicious.

Add 30 NT$ to the super value combo for a choice of two – Shadow opted for orange juice.

The spicy curry we had this time was surprisingly good. In the past, we usually went for sweet curry at Guruguru, but this time we boldly chose the spicy version. It wasn’t as spicy as expected—in fact, the level of spiciness really stimulated our appetite. For an affordable curry spot, the quality and ambiance are definitely up to par. It’s a curry shop with a fresh new look—we welcome both regulars and newcomers to give it a try. Highly recommended!
