French photographer Dimitri, who creates art under the brand “Jahz Design” and has a passion for photographing ruins, previously introduced his UFO monument works to everyone. This time, he showcases another ruin — the former NATO communications base.
The base’s full name is “ACE High-Station Livorno Monte Giogo,” located atop Monte del Giogo in northern Italy. It was activated in 1956 to provide tropospheric scatter communication for nine NATO countries, covering a range from northern Norway to southeastern Turkey — nearly 4,000 kilometers.
However, as satellite technology became increasingly advanced, the base’s role diminished, until it was officially closed in 1994.
Although the base was taken over in 2005 with plans to convert it into a civilian facility, the buildings have remained abandoned for over a decade, and its future remains uncertain.
