Last updated 2026-11-08 — On April 27, 2017, local time, in Kathmandu, Nepal, Taiwanese youth Liang Shengyue, who had come to Nepal to challenge the Himalayas, was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kathmandu and was conscious. In March, Liang Shengyue and his girlfriend Liu Chenjun traveled to Nepal to challenge the Himalayas and signed up with a local mountaineering travel agency, “Asian Trekking,” without hiring a guide. They left their homestay on March 8 and were last spotted by other hikers on March 9, after which they lost contact. Nearly 47 days after going missing, the two were found on April 26. Liang Shengyue survived, but his girlfriend Liu Chenjun tragically passed away.
According to reports, on the day the two went missing, heavy snow fell in multiple areas of the mountains, triggering an avalanche. The couple once tried to retreat to a valley at a lower altitude. Eventually, Liang Shengyue was found in the Nachit Valley on April 26, but Liu Chenjun had unfortunately died three days before being discovered.

Liang Shengyue was found conscious and able to speak, but physically weak, and was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment. After gradually recovering, Liang Shengyue was interviewed by the media on the 28th, recounting the various ordeals he and his girlfriend endured while trapped and explaining how he managed to survive those days.

Liang Shengyue said that he and Liu Chenjun set out to climb the mountain in late February, got lost in early March, and during the time they were trapped, they even considered jumping off a cliff to end their lives. However, they found a cave and hid inside it.

During the first three weeks of being trapped, they ate cooked potatoes they had brought, made flour paste by mixing flour with water, chewed raw rice, and maintained basic physical strength. “Because we still had gas, we ate instant noodles twice — that was super happy.” Later, when food gradually ran out, they ate oil and salt. “We’d dip our fingers in a bit of salt — salt has a lot of minerals — just two or three bites a day, along with mountain spring water, and that was enough.”
After being trapped for nearly three weeks, Liang Shengyue and Liu Chenjun gradually became desperate. Liang Shengyue said, “I remember it was March 17, and we both decided to just burn charcoal and end it.” But using the trekking poles left by other hikers and our tent, we couldn’t get it to light. Thinking that since we weren’t going to die anyway, we might as well let nature take its course.
Liang Shengyue revealed that in the final, most desperate stage of being trapped, his girlfriend Liu Chenjun had actively suggested, “If one of us dies first, let’s eat the other’s flesh to survive.” However, he immediately dismissed the idea, laughing and saying, “We both have to live, otherwise we might end up fighting over who to eat.” Later, when his girlfriend passed away first, the media asked, “Did you ever think about eating the flesh?” Liang Shengyue replied that he never did.

During the time they were trapped, aside from encouraging each other, they mostly spaced out, and to conserve energy, the two even agreed not to talk during the day. He and his girlfriend once talked about what they would do after being rescued — she said she wanted to eat tofu pudding when she got back.
Liang Shengyue recalled with emotion that on the day Liu Chenjun died, she kept calling out, “Dad, Mom, Auntie, Yueyue,” and then never spoke again. At first, he thought she was sleeping. When it was almost evening, he struggled to crawl over to touch her. “Why was she so cold?” Liang Shengyue said, “I started shaking her hard, trying to wake her up, but she didn’t respond.”

The couple’s trip to the Himalayas had been planned and arranged since the previous semester. They originally intended to take a semester off and stay there for four months, but now they were forever separated. Still, Liang Shengyue said that if he could do it all over again, he would still invite Liu Chenjun to climb the mountains “because it’s what she loved.”
