When it comes to famous attractions in Luodong, Yilan, many people’s first thought is the “Luodong Night Market.” Our family loves night markets—we visit them on every trip to experience local culture and try all kinds of street food. This time, during our family trip to Yilan, while we were looking for parking near the Luodong Night Market, we unexpectedly discovered that the nearby Zhongshan Park had changed. Among the greenery, we spotted splashes of bright colors that gave the park a whole new vibe.

Yilan’s Luodong Zhongshan Park is a historic century-old park, where remnants of the past can be seen everywhere. Standing amidst the modern hustle and bustle, these elements once seemed out of place and discordant. In response, the renovation team gave Zhongshan Park a makeover and invited four illustrators to add whimsical art installations throughout the park to beautify it.

The large “Green Gong” symbol at the entrance represents inviting the youth to step onto the historical stage of Luodong Zhongshan Park and ring the gong of a new generation, allowing the younger generation to continue writing new chapters infused with cultural creativity and vitality of the times. Take a closer look—the staircase is painted with vibrant yellow hues, reminiscent of the resonant sound produced by striking the Green Gong, as generational heritage begins anew.

Wow, an adorable little monkey appears on the staircase, using the entire ground as its canvas, painting each step with vivid colors, transforming the earthy tones into something colorful and beautiful.

The name “Luodong” originated from the local indigenous Kavalan people, who referred to “monkeys” (rutung) as “laodong,” which was later adopted and became “Luodong.”

Illustrator Ma Sai Kyo drew inspiration from local cultural meanings to create “Dongdong Who Loves to Draw.” This little monkey Dongdong hides behind the outdoor performance area of the Green Gong Base, quietly watching various performances. Once the crowds disperse, he picks up his brush and begins creating nonstop, inspired endlessly.

Taking a moment of leisure in a busy life is a luxury and a beautiful thing. Under the big tree, we found a little golden figure and sat beside him, trying to see the world through his perspective.

Illustrator Ma Sai Kyo hopes to remind everyone to bravely wait and hold onto hope through the little red figure, who symbolizes brave waiting. Beside the little golden figure are glowing orbs radiating hopeful, beautiful colors—what a positively uplifting scene.

On the other side of the tree, there are also a few cute little black figures. Each has different expressions and poses, looking incredibly lively and fun. Since Luodong Zhongshan Park is a very important performance venue in eastern Taiwan, many up-and-coming performers come here to showcase their talents. Therefore, illustrator Chen Pu hopes to highlight the importance of Zhongshan Park to the public through his work “The Little Black Figures Under the Big Tree,” showing them sitting under the tree watching the performance. Everyone, come check out the performing arts here.

Take a turn, and you’ll find the healing Cream Bunny & Bread Guy saying hello to everyone.

When you’re feeling down, take a look at artist Chen Yiyin’s work “Cream Bunny & Bread Guy”—gazing at the sky and enjoying some bread helps you relax and unknowingly absorb their joyful, cute, and healing energy. With positivity restored, you’re ready to hit the road again.

The golden sea turtle really stands out against the blue sky. A child asked us, “Is he looking at Guishan Island?”

The little sea turtle has always been guarding the waters off Yilan. Curious and lively by nature, he enjoys sneaking close to the shore to observe humans. The direction the little sea turtle faces is toward the hometown of creator Ma Sai—Su’ao.

The bright and sunny weather sets off the beautiful new atmosphere of Luodong Zhongshan Park. Many people come here to stroll and have picnics. Take a closer look—the pavilion pillars and lighthouse have shed their old-fashioned red for a unified gold hue, completely transforming the previously dull and outdated look. We strolled leisurely around the park, searching for cute art installations everywhere, taking tons of happy photos as a family and leaving our joyful footprints here.

In addition to the eye-catching art installations, the renovation team also installed perforated, carved lattice screens around the park, blocking off the nearby snack stalls or restaurants and reducing the greasy, unsightly scenery. These lattices also echo the theme of the art installations, fully showcasing the park’s whimsical features.

Having explored unique parks across Taiwan, Little Yo—who’s always on the hunt for slides whenever he visits a park—even found a fun one here at Luodong Zhongshan Park. There are both slender and wide slides, and both are super fun. The century-old slide that children love is guarded by “Light Deer,” shining in the darkest corner of the park, lighting up this small grove and guiding everyone to rethink the importance of nature and cherish it.

Walking along the pathway, a colorful building appeared before us.

This is the Children’s English Library. Illustrator Mr. Re-Ding believes that a library is a place full of imagination, hope, and opportunities to engage the mind and spirit. The brown horse “Mr. Re-Ding / Mr. Reading” sits in a bright, colorful forest of reading, attracting families to come and enjoy the fun and inspiration that reading brings.

Luodong Zhongshan Park becomes even more beautiful at night, with the perforated, carved lattice screens casting beautiful interplays of light and shadow.

After the renovation, the nights are no longer dark and littered, turning the park into a hangout for undesirables. Now, visitors can grab snacks from the Luodong Night Market, then stroll leisurely here to chat and enjoy good food. The entire park is bustling with life, lighting up a new corner of the city.

Coming to Luodong is no longer just about the night market. During the day, bring your kids to run and play at Luodong Zhongshan Park, and at night, take a relaxing stroll to enjoy the scenery. “The Green Gong – Luodong Zhongshan Park Youth Innovation Base” completely changes your impression of old parks.
