Taichung’s “Mini Egg” Rises Again: First Multi-functional Baseball Sports Center to Open Early Next Year

The multi-functional sports center at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium (dubbed the “Mini Egg”), originally scheduled for completion last year, finally obtained its usage permit in June this year due to construction delays. It is expected to begin operations as early as the beginning of next year. Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung recently visited the site and noted that the Mini Egg, with its multifunctional design, will be developed into Taiwan’s first baseball-themed sports and leisure park. It can also serve as a venue for badminton, basketball, and large-scale events.

Covering an area of approximately 89,000 square meters and standing 29 meters tall, the Mini Egg has 3,000 seats. Its architectural design is inspired by a “baseball,” featuring a white sphere with red stitching. The Mini Egg is positioned as a venue meeting international Olympic standards and is expected to host weightlifting competitions during the 2019 East Asian Youth Games. Additionally, in preparation for the East Asian Youth Games, the Mini Egg will be developed into a museum themed around baseball and sports. The surrounding area will also attract various investments and feature sports-oriented entertainment facilities.

In addition, construction of the multi-level parking structure began in May, and the facility, which will offer over 1,000 parking spaces, is set to be completed by March next year. This is expected to alleviate nearby traffic congestion and provide more parking options for the public.
