The rainy season is upon us, and many areas are experiencing frequent disasters such as floods, landslides, and lightning strikes. This season also coincides with peak travel periods. When you're on the road, knowing the right ways to avoid danger and save yourself is crucial.
How should you take the correct emergency measures and save yourself when facing sudden disasters? Here are some key points to keep in mind for outdoor activities during the rainy season.

Pre-trip preparation:

To avoid being caught off guard by emergencies outdoors, thorough pre-trip preparation is essential. First, have a pair of comfortable waterproof hiking shoes. In the southern rainy season, roads can be muddy, and hiking shoes not only protect your feet but also aid in escaping in emergencies. It's also advisable to carry a small bottle of white liquor, which can be used for disinfection in urgent situations. Bring a roll of gauze and several band-aids for unexpected needs. It's best to prepare a waterproof bag as well—when it rains, you can store valuables such as your phone, cash, and camera in it to prevent damage from moisture.
Self-rescue equipment:

In the wilderness, sometimes seemingly insignificant small items can play a big role. For example, a whistle or a bright flashlight can be very useful at critical moments. Use a whistle to call for help during the day and pair it with a bright flashlight at night to attract the attention of rescuers.

Tips for setting up camp:

Setting up camp is a common activity outdoors. However, avoid setting up in riverbeds, riverbanks, streamsides, or valley areas. During the rainy season, valleys in mountainous regions of the south are most prone to flash floods. Therefore, before pitching a tent, carefully assess the terrain, especially paying extra attention to areas close to rock walls, and try to avoid camping in concave spots.

Emergency measures for encountering severe thunderstorms:

1. If you encounter a severe thunderstorm while outdoors, turn off all communication devices such as your mobile phone. Try to move to lower-lying areas, avoiding open ground and staying away from under trees. Temporarily squat in the middle of the woods, keeping as much as 5 meters away from tree trunks.

2. Carry a lightweight, insulated raincoat. Umbrellas usually have metal handles and are not recommended for use during severe thunderstorms. Avoid wearing metal accessories such as keys or jewelry.

3. If you are driving, keep the car windows closed and maintain some distance from the doors and windows. On a boat, take shelter under the deck in the cabin and stay away from metal objects. In open areas, place your hands on your knees, press your legs together, and squat—never lie down on the ground. Avoid staying near bodies of water or in low-lying areas to prevent being caught in flash floods or landslides.

4. If you suddenly encounter strong winds, seek nearby shelters in tourist areas such as guard booths or shops. On a mountain, head downhill as quickly as possible; protection stations or farmhouses below halfway up the mountain can offer safety. If there's no time to escape, take cover in a deeper cave, but do not stand at the cave entrance. In the city, go to the nearest tall building, as they are usually equipped with lightning rods.
