With a history of over 60 years, Makishi Public Market No. 1 evolved from a post-war black market. It brings together all locally sourced ingredients from Okinawa and is a marketplace that best represents the lives of local Okinawans.
The arcade shopping street centered around Makishi Public Market No. 1 is called “Market Dori,” and along with the adjacent “Heiwa Dori,” they form a large commercial district. Over time, major souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in. Today, Makishi Public Market and its surrounding shopping area have become must-visit destinations for tourists.
The market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is for fresh food vendors, and the second floor consists of family-style eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily fresh local Okinawan produce. There are also a variety of grocery stalls selling cooking seasonings, dried foods, pickles, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can bring them upstairs to your favorite eatery for preparation and dining.
