With a history of over 60 years, Makishi Public Market No. 1 evolved from a postwar black market. It gathers all kinds of local Okinawan ingredients and is one of the most representative markets for locals.
The arcade shopping street centered around Makishi Public Market No. 1 is called “Market Honten Dori,” which together with the adjacent “Heiwa Dori” forms a large commercial district. Over time, major souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in, and today Makishi Public Market and its surrounding area have become a must-visit destination for tourists.
The market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is for fresh food vendors, while the second floor houses family-run eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily deliveries of locally sourced Okinawan ingredients. There are also a variety of stalls selling cooking seasonings, dried goods, pickled items, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can bring them upstairs to your favorite eatery to be cooked and enjoyed.
