The First Makishi Public Market has a history of over 60 years and evolved from a post-war black market. It gathers all kinds of locally sourced ingredients in Okinawa and is the most representative "market" for locals.
The arcade shopping street centered around the First Makishi Public Market is called "Market-hon-dori," which together with the adjacent "Heiwa-dori" forms a large commercial district. Over time, major souvenir shops and drugstores have moved in. Nowadays, the Makishi Public Market and its surrounding commercial area have become a must-visit destination for tourists.
The Makishi Public Market is mainly divided into two floors: the first floor is the fresh produce section, while the second floor consists of family-run eateries. In the seafood and meat sections, you can find daily fresh local Okinawan ingredients. There are also a variety of grocery stalls selling cooking seasonings, dried goods, pickles, and more. After purchasing ingredients on the first floor, you can take them upstairs to your preferred eatery for cooking and dining.
