The World’s Most Challenging Building — National Taichung Theater Opens on the 26th, Free Guided Tours for Locals

The National Taichung Theater is set to officially open on the 26th. To help the public better appreciate the charm of this “ninth greatest new landmark in the world,” the venue is offering three types of guided tours, with free admission for Taichung residents upon presenting valid ID.

The National Taichung Theater was designed by renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito.It is considered the “world’s most difficult building to build” by the architecture community due to its beamless, column-free “curved wall” construction technique. This design was initially rejected by Japan’s architectural circles, deemed impossible to construct. Even top international architectural teams backed out, until finally, a Taiwanese team—Lih Ming Construction—successfully completed it.Both the curved walls and another feature, the water curtain fireproofing system, have since been granted world patents. Reuters also ranked it as the “ninth greatest new landmark in the world.”

Starting on the 26th, the National Taichung Theater will offer three regular guided tours and two children’s tours daily, with nighttime tours taking place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. During the tours, visitors will wear audio guides and explore the theater together with guides, visiting architectural highlights such as the Tipsy Stream, Cloud Gate, Bulging Hall, and the Rooftop Garden. They can even walk along the theater’s most mysterious “catwalk” to uncover every fascinating corner of the venue.

The appeal of the nighttime tour lies in how the theater transforms at night—a giant glowing structure nestled within the city, offering a completely different aesthetic from the daytime. The “nighttime tour” takes visitors from the outside in, showcasing the theater’s diverse charms, while also providing a unique view of its exclusive nighttime scenery from within.

The guided tour fee at the National Taichung Theater is 100 NTD per person. Those holding a Taichung Citizen Card, those registered as residents of Taichung, and school groups from Taichung may join for free upon presenting valid ID. Persons with disabilities and one accompanying person, as well as seniors aged 65 and above, are eligible for a 50% discount.
