In the mid-15th century, golf became popular in Scotland. This uniquely charming outdoor sport drew many young people away from Scotland’s “national art” ― archery. As a result, in 1457, King James II issued a ban on the game of golf. But this did not stop the young enthusiasts. A tailor from a northern Scottish border town, Joseph Beaume, secretly founded the “Golf Freedom Club,” leading a group of sport-loving, nature-aspiring youths to play golf together. He also made clubs and equipment for the members. The open spaces and the sea breeze allowed these young people to better understand what perseverance, challenge, and freedom truly mean.
