How can you visit Tainan without checking out its night markets? Unlike Taipei’s night markets, those in Tainan don’t operate every day — miss the right day and you’ll miss them all. That’s why a popular online rhyme — “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven; Da, Da, Wu, Hua, Da, Wu, Hua” — helps travelers quickly figure out the opening days of Tainan’s three major night markets. ETtoday EBC News Cloud has specially compiled a list of five popular night markets in Tainan, so you can quickly get the scoop on their features and operating hours.

Tainan’s three most crowded night markets are Dadao Night Market, Garden Night Market, and Wusheng Night Market. The seven-word rhyme “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven; Da, Da, Wu, Hua, Da, Wu, Hua” refers to the opening days of these three night markets. When planning your trip to Tainan, be sure to factor in their operating hours.

Garden Night Market

Known as Taiwan’s most popular night market, Garden Night Market is open on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. It’s not only a must-visit spot for travelers but also a source of pride for locals. With nearly 300 ping (about 990 square meters) of stalls and around 400 vendors, plus an additional parking lot spanning about 2,000 ping (around 6,600 square meters), Garden Night Market draws massive crowds due to its fame. To avoid the crowds, it’s best to go on a non-holiday (Thursday), or during early opening hours and after 10 or 11 PM when it’s less busy.

Garden Night Market is divided into sections for food snacks, trendy fashion, and game zones. Crowds start gathering during dinnertime, and most stalls require queuing. Online favorites include Da Tong Charcoal-Grilled Chicken Cutlet, Er Shixiong Braised Snacks, Yanji Stinky Tofu, Chenji Spicy Duck Blood, and Crispy Fried Squid. The game zone features balloon shooting, mahjong games for stuffed toys, and more — spend just NT$100 for a chance to win a cute plush toy, a big hit with young people. There’s also the famously witty and humorous pitchman “Pitchman Xiang” from Garden Xiang, whose entertaining sales tactics have made his stall another Garden Night Market highlight.

Dadao Night Market

Open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, Dadao Night Market is known for its wide variety of street food. Its hours don’t overlap with Garden Night Market, and many of Garden’s popular vendors can also be found here — such as Er Shixiong Braised Snacks, Yanji Stinky Tofu, and Mu Chu Braised Snacks. Plus, Dadao Night Market is home to “Huangji Spicy Crispy Intestine,” where tofu and fish cakes start at just NT$5. Its affordable prices and great taste draw long lines, making it a must-try.

Wusheng Night Market

Tainan’s oldest night market, Wusheng Night Market, operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays. With about 250 stalls, it’s bustling but not overcrowded — a nostalgic old market that generations of Tainan residents have frequented since childhood. Fans online recommend eats like Speedy Shawarma, wraps, egg cakes, Ounan Fresh Oyster Stall’s grilled oysters, and Sweet Potato Pandas’ sweet potato balls. Not sure what to try on your first visit? Little North Night Market

The Little North Night Market (also known as Little North Success Night Market), which opened just a few years after the Wusheng Night Market, is also a long-established night market in Tainan. It’s open Tuesdays and Fridays, which avoids overlapping with the Garden Night Market in the same North District. With fewer crowds than the Garden Night Market, it’s more pleasant to stroll around, making it ideal for those who prefer less hustle and bustle. It features hidden gems like the old-school 2E Ping’s beef noodles stall, compact and satisfying meals, as well as affordable chicken cutlets and stinky tofu. There’s also a beloved oyster omelet stall that’s a local favorite.

Yonghua Night Market

Aside from Tainan’s most famous Garden Night Market, there are many other night markets that have been operating quietly for years, mostly frequented by locals and attracting fewer tourists. The Yonghua Night Market, which operated on Yonghua Road for 14 years, is one such community-oriented night market. In March 2014, it had to shut down due to the landowner reclaiming the property, but after much effort by vendors and organizers, it reopened in March 2015 across from the parking lot of the Lin Mo Niang Park. It's now open Thursdays and Sundays, offering food and shopping in a familiar neighborhood setting.

Its proximity to Anping Fishing Port gives Yonghua Night Market a distinctive flavor. You can enjoy the sea breeze while tasting the so-called “best night market steak in Taiwan”—“Clever Tiger”—as well as popular local snacks like enzyme-fermented stinky tofu, fried squid, and oyster omelets. There’s also a spacious thousand-ping parking lot, very convenient for drivers. Since reopening, Yonghua Night Market has been actively recruiting new stalls.
