Cycling not only strengthens the body but also greatly aids in improving memory. According to a recent report by Men’s Health magazine in the United States, a new study from the University of California has found that cycling daily can help enhance memory.
The scientists studied 54 participants, some with memory impairments and others with normal memory function. The participants first viewed a set of images. Then, half of them cycled for six minutes while the other half remained seated. One hour later, they were asked to recall the images, and saliva samples were taken. The results showed that the “cycling group” had significantly elevated levels of salivary alpha-amylase, indicating a substantial improvement in their memory.
Dr. Sabrina Segil, the lead researcher of the new study, stated that cycling can boost memory in both those with strong and weak memory abilities. This is because exercise helps increase levels of norepinephrine in the body, and higher levels of this chemical in the brain play an important role in enhancing memory.
