It really feels like the streets of Japan!! I heard the owner used to live in Japan for several years and now runs a Japanese-style fried food and home-cooked meals spot in Tainan — that’s Fulu right here. Let’s try some hidden gems today!!

I saw someone sharing this place online before, and its Japanese street-style vibe has always attracted me. It really feels like the streets of Japan!! I heard the owner used to live in Japan for several years and now runs a Japanese-style fried food and home-cooked meals spot in Tainan — that’s Fulu right here. This isn’t Japan’s late-night diner, but a genuine hidden spot in an alley in East District, Tainan!!

Fulu is hidden within a residential apartment area. In a dimly lit alley, you’ll see a light glowing — step inside, and there it is: the Fulu Japanese-style fried food joint I was looking for. I heard some foodies have visited several times before finally getting a taste. The shop keeps a low profile; when I tried to confirm their business hours, I looked for their Facebook page but couldn’t find one. Just to be safe, we called ahead to check if they were open, so we wouldn’t show up for nothing.

Let’s take a look at the MENU. They mainly serve Japanese-style fried dishes, curry rice, tonkatsu rice... and the prices are quite affordable and friendly. We went a bit late that day, and the curry rice was already sold out — seems like Fulu’s curry rice is pretty popular. Next time I’ll go earlier to try it.

Japanese Fried Chicken with Garlic Flavor – NT$65

The fried chicken comes with edamame on the side. I think the edamame is really delicious. There’s also a bit of salt sprinkled on the outside, giving it a slightly salty taste. The Japanese-style edamame can also be ordered separately.

The owner also gave us their homemade spicy sauce to try with the fried chicken. That spicy sauce is a bit different from the usual ones — it has a hint of garlic flavor. I’d say the spice level is pretty mild, but those who don’t eat spicy food might find it quite hot. The fried chicken has a crispy, savory crust, and the meat inside is tender and juicy. Though the garlic flavor isn’t very strong, it’s still tasty fried chicken.

Tonkatsu Rice – NT$99

Not sure if I got the price right, but the tonkatsu comes with refreshing shredded cabbage and some side dishes. Drizzle on some tonkatsu sauce, take a bite of the cabbage, and enjoy the slightly crispy and chewy tonkatsu. The coating isn’t too thick — it’s pretty good.

Potato Croquette – NT$30

The croquette has a crispy, golden crust on the outside, and the inside is mashed potato.

If you also like this kind of Japanese-style fried food or curry rice, come give it a try. The owner is super friendly, speaks softly, and you’ll occasionally hear her murmuring in Japanese — for a moment, it feels like you’re in Japan.
