CSIA Skiing Secrets

CSIA has distilled decades of experience into three key elements and five fundamental skills for learning to ski.
I. The Three Elements
1. Centred/Mobile Stance
2. Turning with the lower body
3. Balance on edges

II. The Five Fundamental Skills
To fully embody the above three elements, it’s essential to continually understand and practice the following five basic skills:
1. Stance and Balance
2. Pivoting
3. Edging
4. Pressure control
5. Timing and coordination

Based on my current limited understanding.

The benefits of learning the CSIA system are
1. Observing the demonstrations by CSIA instructors—whether on groomed runs, off-piste, or when performing giant slalom or slalom—we notice their movements are highly consistent, elegant, and easily recognizable. This consistency stems from their adherence to the three key elements under all conditions, reflecting an overall unity that allows them to adapt to any situation. The strategies for different snow conditions or skiing styles involve the flexible application and combination of the five fundamental skills while maintaining those three core elements. Thus, this unifying consistency ensures systematic and coherent learning in skiing.

2. CSIA emphasizes the teaching of foundational theory. By combining outdoor skiing with indoor theoretical instruction and explanations, students come to understand why certain exercises are performed and what their purposes are. Once students grasp the reasoning, they can apply their knowledge broadly—even practicing independently without instructor guidance—leading to more efficient and effective learning.
