It’s now the season for golden needle flowers, and many people make special trips to the mountainous areas of Hualien and Taitung to admire the beautiful golden fields. But did you know there’s also a place in Taipei City where you can enjoy these blooms? It’s Ciyin Mountain Villa in Muzha. Though not many know about this hidden gem, and it doesn’t offer the vast mountain-wide seas of flowers found in Hualien and Taitung, the proximity to the city center allows you to see an entire slope of golden needle fields—an almost mini version of Sixty Stone Mountain—that has still attracted many visitors for flower-gazing and photography.

Ciyin Mountain Villa is actually part of the property belonging to the Yi Guan Dao temple on Daxiangshan in Xindian, covering about 3 acres. A volunteer auntie working there shared that this field of golden needle flowers was planted around seven or eight years ago. However, even many locals living at the foot of the mountain are unaware that such a beautiful sea of flowers blooms here in the summer. The flowers aren’t fully bloomed yet, but by mid-to-late September, you can expect to see the entire hillside covered in blooms.

Aside from the flowers, Ciyin Mountain Villa, being part of Ciyin Rock, also operates a vegetarian set-meal restaurant and sells organic produce. Walking up the stairs beside the villa, you can also see the organic farming in progress. Urban dwellers who rarely get to see vegetable gardens can, in addition to flower-gazing, also spot dragon fruits wrapped up in orchards, loofahs hanging from trellises, or various vegetables grown in net houses.

Beyond the summer golden needle blooms, Ciyin Mountain Villa offers different scenic beauty throughout the year: from December to January, you can immerse yourself in apricot blossom forests; from January to March, there are cherry blossoms; in March and April, enjoy azalea seas and maple forests; in May, see the rare-in-the-city dragon fruit flower walls; and from October through winter, it’s the season for plum blossoms. Additionally, beyond enjoying nature’s tranquility in the mountains, you can also gaze at Taipei 101 from the villa, adding another layer of interest.
