Play Even on Rainy Days ! Taiwan’s Most Beautiful Train Station Has a Free “Grassland Slide” Under the Tracks

Slides are an important childhood playmate that accompanies kids as they grow up, but since many slides are built in open-air spaces, how to let children play to their heart's content when it rains becomes one of the challenges for every parent. Underneath the train tracks at Dongshan Train Station in Yilan, a “grassland slide” has been created. With its vast artificial turf and stone slide, it’s open to the public free of charge. Even on rainy days, children can run and play here to their heart's content, releasing their energy.

Dongshan Train Station can be considered one of the most beautiful train stations in Taiwan. The elevated tracks feature a series of arched canopies that represent the area’s former name, “Winter Melon Mountain.” The endless stretch of canopies and flowing light and shadows make it a popular spot among railway enthusiasts to capture stunning views.

Exit the station, turn right, then right again, and walk for about two minutes under the elevated tracks to find a children’s play area that’s not afraid of wind or sun. The vast artificial turf allows kids to take off their shoes and run around freely. There’s also a stone slide where children can be seen sliding down over and over. Even when the sun is blazing outside, the shaded space under the tracks lets kids fully release their energy. When tired, they can just lie flat on the grass to rest. It has become a go-to rainy-day plan for many parents — no need to worry about having nowhere to go when it rains.
